Judybeth Greene is a printmaker and a painter. Her art celebrates the human spirit, history and connectedness - to oneself, to others and to a higher spirit.
Often, she has been described as a painter of emotion. In the past few years, her work has focused on paintings of women as "goddesses" with great strength, power and beauty. One of these goddesses was recently featured on the cover of the HILL RAG (Feb. 2002) in Washington, D.C. Since her marriage to Ron Fagnani in December 2002, much of her new work features couples, in playful, Chagall-inspired dances.
Judybeth's work also addresses political issues on an "as necessary" basis. For example, in 2001 and 2002, she worked with an Arab-American artist in Washington, D.C. to create a colorful art exhibit entitled "Foods of Peace" focusing on the basic food staples historically shared by Jews and Arabs, as a context for engaging in dialogue. Other more raw paintings, addressing fear and the cycle of violence were featured at The ARTery's "War and Sentiment" show during March and April 2003 in Takoma Park, D.C.
Originally from Massachusetts, Judybeth migrated to Washington, D.C. for law school in the mid-1980s. While working for the government in civil rights, Judybeth honed her art skills through over 30 art courses and workshops across the county, as well as through a Post-Baccalaureate program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (2000/2001). Since 1994, Judybeth's work has appeared in local venues from Eastern Market in Washington, D.C, and Baltimore's ARTSCAPE, to galleries, restaurants, religious institutions and art festivals. She has also illustrated two poetry books: Sacred Voices: Women of Genesis Speak and Journey into Healing by Sherri Waas Shunfenthal (Pocol Press 2000 and 2003).
